PSYCHOLOGY - RATIONAL THOUGHT The importance of rational thought in the exploration of the demonic hypothesis cannot be overstated. It is unethical to entertain or encourage the belief that a problem is caused by demons before all other possible causes are ruled out. If we do not rule out possible medical or substance based causes we could move on to a spiritual treatment or intervention, leaving a possibly serious problem untreated. Further damage can be done if spiritual intervention is performed, encouraging a psychotic belief that the devil is afflicting a person. This is why the Roman Catholic Church in her wisdom requires extensive ruling out of medical and psychological hypotheses before allowing spiritual treatment of a problem with an exorcism. Whether you are clergy, an investigator, or a concerned person you need to remember that real demonic problems are very rare. Most cases turn out to be people under stress misinterpreting their environment, sleep disorders, or mental illness. Do not make the mistake of being "pro-demon" and supporting the demonic hypothesis too early and with too little evidence. Consult with the family doctor, the mental health team (if applicable), and everyone in contact with the person reporting difficulties. Rule out simple things like bad wiring, the activity of pets, simple sleep problems, and hysteria. If you do find what seems to be a real demonic problem consult with experts with experience in these matters, don't think you can intervene based on knowledge from books or web sites.
